Session 7 Week in Review - Week 30
Zoom Gatherings
Some highlights from Zoom Gatherings this week included:
Monday: Monday, Annie facilitated a learner-led launch on standardized testing in schools, and led a discussion where learners discussed how schools should handle the pressure to teach to the test.
Tuesday: Tuesday, David facilitated a learner-led launch on comfort zones and if we can grow while staying in our comfort zone, or if we need challenge in order to grow.
Wednesday: Wednesday was the last Skill-Builder in the Research series. Learners examined examples of citations in MLA and worked in groups to create their own citation for two sources given to them.
Thursday: Thursday, our Young Changemaker launch focused on Kiara Nirghin, who at 16 created a biodegradable material that helps soil retain water during droughts. She struggled to be taken seriously at her age, but eventually won the Google Science Fair.
Week 30 Highlights
We’re kicking off our final session with thoughtful discussion, new skills, and a strong focus on finishing well and planning ahead:
New Skills in Action: Learners tried their hand at creating MLA citations, many for the very first time! Shoutout to the two teams who earned house points for getting a citation correct: Brooks W, Aziza, Anna, Kayden, and Vivienne, along with Nebhan, Amara, and Louis. Great teamwork and attention to detail!
Socratic Thinking Deepens:
David led a powerful launch on The Comfort Loop, sparking discussion around whether true growth can happen in comfort—or if challenge is required.
Annie led a thought-provoking conversation on whether test scores are the best way to measure learning, and whether schools should be required to prioritize standardized testing.
These conversations pushed learners to think critically, consider multiple perspectives, and engage respectfully.
Finishing Strong & Looking Ahead: Check-ins are now focused on wrapping up badge plans for the year while also beginning to think ahead to next year’s goals and badge plans. It’s exciting to see learners reflecting on their growth and planning their next steps with intention.
This week was a great reminder that learning isn’t just about what you complete—it’s about how you think, question, and grow along the way.
Family Conversation Starters:
What was most challenging about creating an MLA citation for the first time?
Do you think people can grow while staying comfortable, or do we need challenge? Why?
Are test scores a fair way to measure learning? What might be a better way?
What are you most focused on finishing before the end of the year?
What’s one goal you’re already thinking about for next year?
Have a wonderful weekend, FSO Families—let’s finish this year with purpose and reflection!
