All about S.T.E.M.

“You can teach a student a lesson for a day, but if you teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.” - Clay P. Bedford
This session is all about fun learning through science! Learners will participate in activities using science, technology, engineering, and math and explore real-world connections. These four fields share an emphasis on innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Using these skills, learners will create their own S.T.E.M challenge that's connected to a real-world problem.

Learners will take action by working with a local, global, or online organization to create a project that helps to support, defend, or bring awareness to an issue related to protecting Earth’s many natural treasures. During the Session 7 Exhibition, learners will present the conservation efforts they did in collaboration with the organization and ask guests to take action in support of their initiatives.

The culminating project will be for learners to participate in a live debate, advocating for their assigned position on a controversial topic about conservation!

Manifest Destiny

Civilization this session examines the concept of Manifest Destiny in America and how that mindset led to events related to the Civil War. Learners will consider how the oppressive treatment of Native Americans, enslaved Africans, and freed Africans conflicted with the conception of human rights at the time; and how to coalition of abolitionists, activists, and every day heroes led to social progress and continues to influence today. They will begin to ponder how human rights developed in the early 1900's in America, leading to women’s rights, workers’ rights, and African American rights. We will have tough conversations and consider the extent to which the Manifest Destiny mindset of the 1800's persists in American culture.

Green Chemistry

Green chemistry is “the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, use, and ultimate disposal.” Learners will analyze the lifecycle of a consumer product and research an alternative sustainable products/ingredients, by comparing which of the Green Chemistry twelve principles are associated with each product.
