You're Invited to this Thursday's (Dec 20) Exhibition—completely learner-driven—from 4:45-5:45pm at The Forest School
Join us this Thursday, December 20, 2018, from 4:45-5:45pm at The Forest School for our Session 3 Exhibition.
The event will be completely learner-driven.
Our elementary learners have been exploring a mash-up of (1) simple machines and (2) local issues facing the city of Fayetteville, GA. This Thursday, elementary learners will use a self-created Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM) to share a solution they believe will help one of Fayetteville’s most pressing issues.
Our middle school learners have been exploring a combination of (1) biology and (2) local landmarks in Fayetteville, GA. On Thursday, they will demonstrate deeper learning by making a case for why a particular aspect of biology is like the city of Fayetteville.
You can visit the Exhibition anytime between 4:45-5:45pm (12/20) as it will be a "drop-in" format. The Exhibition will be interactive in that visitors will have the chance to engage with each group’s demonstrations of learning and to provide virtual feedback using your smartphone.
For this Exhibition, we are thrilled to welcome seven accomplished judges. The judges include a group of high performing, Atlanta-based “external experts”—scientists, city planners, community leaders, and educators—who will give in depth feedback to our heroes about their work.
These experienced professionals will spend quality time with each of our learner groups to understand their perspectives, and ultimately share high quality feedback.
Dr. David Bull
David L. Bull, Ph.D., is a Senior Health Scientist for Policy and Issues Management in the Division of Global Health Protection, Center for Global Health, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He also serves as the Central Asia regional manager for offices in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Dr. Bull has worked with the CDC since 1997, holding several different international program management and policy positions. His international assignments with the CDC include technical assistance visits to Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Israel, Morocco, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Norway, South Africa, Haiti, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. Prior to his joining the CDC, he served in the Middle East with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency as a technical adviser in the Palestinian refugee camps in West Bank, Gaza, Jordan and Syria from 1992-95. In the 1980’s he worked as the Director of a primary health care project in Ecuador with Medical Assistance Program International, and as Regional Director of a tuberculosis control program in Haiti with International Child Care. Dr. Bull earned a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His dissertation research was on immunization uptake in Bolivia.
Jahnee Prince
Jahnee is Community Development Director for the city of Fayetteville, GA. She and her team coordinate the development and implementation of the City of Fayetteville’s Comprehensive Plan, special area studies, plan review process, Zoning Ordinance, Landscape Ordinance and GIS program. Prior to joining the Fayetteville team, Jahnee worked as Economic Development Manager for the city of Sandy Springs, GA, and served as VP of Policy for the Council for Quality Growth where she focused on promoting economic development policy in sixteen counties,” the city reported in a press release. Jahnee also served as Director of Planning and Zoning for the City of Fayetteville, Senior Planner for the Atlanta Regional Commission, and was an Urban Planner for HOK. Jahnee received her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from Ohio State University.
Acelyn-Marie Abinsay
Acelyn Abinsay works as a Senior Improvement Consultant at Piedmont Healthcare in the Quality Improvement department. Her projects range from improving infection outcomes to timely patient reassessments in the emergency room, all of which have one goal in mind: to prevent harm from reaching the patient. Since graduating from Georgia Tech as an Industrial Engineer, she moved back to her home state of Florida and began her career as a healthcare engineer, with the exception of a one year manufacturing consulting stint. She realized healthcare was more where her passion lay, and so she came right back. Prior to moving back to Atlanta in 2016 and working at Piedmont, Acelyn has been a Process Improvement Consultant in home health care, at Tampa General Hospital, and at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
Chinenye Oparah
Chinenye teaches high school Mathematics at Sandy Creek high school. Previously he taught at LaGrange High and at the Fayette Alternative School. He received his Batchelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Chinenye came to teaching from a career in Low Voltage Contracting as an Engineer specializing in Audio/Video and Automation (Smart-Home) applications.
Katherine Menge
Katherine is a Senior Improvement Consultant at Piedmont Healthcare where she helps spread standard work and reduce variation that can lead to hospital acquired infections and other safety risks for patients. Before working at Piedmont, Katherine served in a similar role at Kaiser Permanente in both Pasadena, California, and Atlanta. She received her BS in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Healthcare System Engineering from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Katherine was on the rowing team at Lehigh and has enjoyed playing sports since childhood. She grew up in Hanover, New Hampshire, where she had strong science leadership from within her own family - both of her parents and her grandfather are all civil engineers. Katherine currently lives in Peachtree City with her fiancé, Bryce, and their golden retriever puppy.
Jeff Eller
Jeff is a STEAM Teacher and Digital Learning Specialist at Spring Hill Elementary School in Fayetteville, GA. His interests range from cycling to running. He is also interested in backpacking, canoeing, and tree climbing. Beverly Bull
Beverly Bull was an registered nurse for 41 years before retiring. She also worked as health missionary in three countries with her family: Haiti, Ecuador, and Israel. Among other destinations, Beverly has undertaken medical service projects in Lebanon, Peru, Argentina, and Kosovo. She loves knowing people from other cultures and countries, and joyfully volunteers in Clarkston, GA, now with Friends of Refugees and Community Bible Study.
Ann Ruhala
This marks Ann’s 15th year in education. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Secondary Teaching Certificate from the University of Michigan. She then gained a Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning from Nova Southeastern University. In addition, She has been recognized as STEM Certified by Coweta County School System. She taught at East Coweta High School for 12 years. She spent two years as a middle school science teacher (in Michigan) before moving to Georgia. Her heart is in the innovative STEM classroom. She served on the ECHS STEM Academy Committee and worked as the 9th Grade STEM Academy sponsor. Also she enjoyed judging various Science Fairs and Innovation Expos at all grade levels. Currently, she is a Biology teacher at Georgia Connections Academy. She is enjoying learning the virtual education world and hope to bring my STEM experience to the virtual high school setting.
